Unfortunatly all I recived in the update was a "mirror" app. The news floating around the internet was that 2.3.3 would include a new version of Google Talk that included Video Calling. One of the things I expected in the update was some functionality for the front facing camera.

How may I help you today?ĭean Farnaby: Earlier this year I was anticipating my Incredible S being upgraded to Android 2.3.3ĭean Farnaby: Once HTC started the roll out I recived the update no problems at all (eventually lol). Karin: Hi Dean, thank you for contacting HTC Support. Fair enough it cost a fortune, I just fail to see why it's no longer supported :S I was making video calls years ago with my old Nokia N series'. But doesn't this seem more of a step back. I know "Internet" Video calling will be free over WiFi. I doubt the IS will be included in this roll out. I understand the Thunderbolt is getting 2.3.4 with the new GTalk on June 30th (roughly). Ok - Did some more reading, Original article stated IS was getting 2.3.4 as annouced at I/O 2011 - I don't recall hearing \ watching this anyway. Perhaps with the Nexus, but not for us IS users. Some further reading today states it will come in 2.3.4 - The article was dated April this year so I don't really think this is the case. I remember reading that GTalk would be updated as part of 2.3.3 (2.3) and would include Video Calling. Source: BBC News - Microsoft confirms takeover of Skype So I wouldn't expect too much from Skype in the future. Skype and Google have fallen out (as above) Microsoft have bought skype out. So I also presume that you would be able to develop an app that uses the front camera on 2.3.3

I presume that this mirror app make use of some drivers or new code included in 2.3.3 that allows the front facing camera to be used. I not 100% on how android handles hardware.

One question we do have is whether or not these features are also available on the Windows 10 Mobile version of Skype - we've reached out to Microsoft to find out and will update this post with any details we find. The only front facing camera functionality I got with 2.3.3 was the "mirror" app that appeared after the update. How often you'll need to initiate or join video calls with many participants while on your phone remains to be seen, but even if it's an infrequently-used feature, making the Skype mobile apps as fully-featured as the desktop version certainly makes sense. For example, you could share a link with someone over iMessage and when the recipient clicks it, they're automatically added to the Skype group video call without the need to actually add them to your contacts list. Using the default sharing tools found in iOS and Android, you can send someone a message on your platform of choice asking them to join the Skype call. The new app also makes it a lot easier to invite people to your group who you might not already have as a Skype contact. You can then swipe through that lineup and find an individual caller and "pin" them to the screen so you always see what they see rather than let Skype pick your view. But once you hit more than seven participants, the display re-arranges things to highlight the person speaking by default, with all the other participants lined up at the bottom of the screen. Supporting that many video callers meant Skype's video chat team had to think long and hard about the UI on such a small screen, and by and large it looks like they were successful.Ī view of what you're broadcasting is always pinned to the lower right hand corner of your screen, and as more and more people are added, the call's grid view dynamically adjusts to show you as many participants as it can.

For starters, the capability is going to be available to Skype users in North American and western Europe, but full worldwide availability is planned for the end of the month.Īt a high level, Skype's mobile video calling feature supports up to 25 participants, broadcasts at 1080p and lets you flip between the front and back camera at will. Today, Microsoft announced that group video calling will start rolling out in the Skype iOS and Android apps.
